Dems Brace for Midterms

By Kaitlan Collins

The midterm elections occurred this Tuesday, November 8. Two of our Democratic senators, Cortez Masto and Warnock, seats’ are potentially up for grabs.

Many Democrats are worried about the Senate flipping to a Republican majority, seeing as the Senate is currently tied with Vice President Kamala Harris being the tie-breaker which makes the Senate an extremely minimal Democratic majority.

It is common for the Senate to flip during a President’s first midterm when the President’s party is also in the majority in the Senate. Polls indicate up to 10 Democrat senate seats have the potential of flipping.

Senator Warnock appeared worried about his state’s election. He expressed, “It’s not looking amazing but I’m confident in my team. We put up an amazing campaign… I just hope everything goes as it's supposed to be. Of course, I would like my seat. it is a bit scary but I think we’ll be okay.”

Cortez Masto was more confident in her assessment of the midterm elections. “I am not worried about losing my seat as I believe in Nevadans. I believe they will chose the person they see best fit and I have proven time and time again that I am that person. My message to everyone eligible: go vote!”

President Biden sent a message of support to both Cortez Masto and Warnock, stating “we really need to keep those crucial swing states to keep our majority and in order for us as Democratic leaders to be able to do our jobs efficiently and to lead the American people effectively.”

Other Democrats and White House officials urged citizens to vote in the midterm elections. Senators Cortez Masto, Sanders, and Vice President Kamala Harris all put out press releases this week urging their constituents to vote in the midterm elections. Harris made sure to put added pressure on citizens for these elections. Harris urged voters “the future of our democracy lies in your hands.”

President Biden addressed the concerns of many citizens and senators that the Senate will flip in the midterm elections. He commented, “I mean that’s always a concern with midterm elections. Especially when the presidential party has the majority in the Senate and the House. And specifically with the Senate having such a small majority currently, it is something I’m concerned about which is why I’m imploring the American people to exercise their right and their duty as American citizens to go out into the polls and to vote for those leaders that you think will efficiently lead our country.”

Urging citizens to get out and vote was the general consensus among most Democrats. Some Republicans joined in on the message as well. Mitch McConnell stated via Twitter on Wednesday for citizens to “Pokémon GO to the polls this November!”

Other Senators on Twitter also joined in on McConnell’s sentiments with Senators Blackburn, Sasse, Cornyn, Baldwin, Cramer, and many more urging citizens to go out and vote on Tuesday.

The midterm elections will be followed closely by the Washington Watch and will continue to report on any updates.
