Peters: economic recovery & armed forces
“Help create an economy that works for everyone and ensure that America has adequate armed forces that can meet the guarantees we make for ourselves and protect our allies.”
King: inflation & unemployment
“I think a key point of emphasis is going to be upon joblessness and inflation and the intertwining of those two. We need to lower unemployment as it currently stands so that we combat the effects of inflation that our citizens are currently feeling.”
Warren: healthcare
“Expand access to healthcare for all Americans, particularly those that are lower income or have pre existing conditions, and we’re gonna do that by decreasing the cost of care throughout the United States and expanding access to Medicaid.”
Hirono: immigration
“My focus is to aid immigration reform and help immigrants. I myself am an immigrant. I understand what it’s like to move to a new country, it’s scary, and I think greater immigration reform and more money allocated to nonprofits that help immigrants adjust to living in the United States will be greatly helpful.”
Sanders: green energy & progressive legislation
“I want to get as much progressive legislation in the budget as I can while still making it passable. A big goal I have for the budget is to get bussing systems to be zero energy. . .I want it to be green energy like the metro system in LA. I really like that system. I would aim to get that in the budget, but I don’t know if that’s going to pass. I just want to create the most progressive legislation in the budget as possible with the collaboration of Senators across the aisle and from all different stances, including Senator Manchin.”
Cardin: agriculture & veterans affairs
“I want to make a strong budget that not only benefits the American people but is innovative and that we can really take something from and make this Senate session special. That’s been a big priority of mine. . .proposing legislation that I think is critical to the American people and that I think is gonna make an impact. . .There is a big focus on energy this year, and there is a big focus on commerce and justice that I hope invigorates and excites the American people. . .In terms of agriculture and veterans affairs, which I’m writing currently, I believe [the budget] is something that will reflect all the work we’ve done in the Senate so far. In terms of veterans affairs: expanding that, providing more discretionary money to veterans and provide them more services that are lacking right now. That’s what I’m working on.”
Manchin: inflation & energy
“The budget should specifically address the growing inflation rates in our country and make sure that Americans are not suffering from high prices, specifically high gas prices. We want to make sure that our energy stays domestic. Two goals that we have as the moderate caucus: We want to keep the deficit below $1.5 trillion. Last year was $1.7 trillion. We want to make sure that we limit government spending and make sure that Americans aren't hurt by either. . . defunding government programs or higher taxes. Additionally, we want to increase domestic energy production from 61% to 70% to ensure that gas prices stay low. And then, additionally, we're focusing on other cleaner energies to reduce carbon emissions. We want to make sure that our children have access to good education, that we have safe borders, that our farmers have good clean water and resources so our produce and various livestock exports can be healthy. Beyond that, we just want to make sure that the American government is as productive and effective as possible.”
