Twitter has been a very popular medium of communication for Senators during this session. Republican senators in particular have been utilizing Twitter far more than the Democrats, tweeting daily. While this makes them more accessible to their constituents and the press, their actions have not been perceived as professional or respectful by some.
Many Democrats have reached out to the Washington Watch to let us know they’re upset over the Republicans' actions on Twitter, saying they’re spreading lies and going against what they’ve been preaching in person. Republicans especially went in on Senator Hirono last Friday. Many condemned her choice to adjourn the floor session and some even called for her resignation.
Republicans seem to be calling out Democrats on Twitter at every chance they get. Here’s what some of them have had to say on Twitter about their Democratic colleagues:
Senator Blackburn:
“Yet another example of how the Democrats will only place the blame on others. Laughable, no wonder the press gave you a D as your grade, Senator Hirono.”
Senator Cornyn:
“How about @MajLeaderHirono you don’t try to sabotage the integrity of the senate and actually put forward legislation that will help the American people? Maybe Democrats don’t trust you because you are a terrible leader? Maybe the Dems should replace you…”
“Lazy liberals always wasting everyone’s time. Such a shame, really.”
“Loony Democrats lying about what happened in Judiciary. King, Manchin, and Sinema are the only ones that have brains on your side!”
“#LyinBiden can’t help but spew falsehoods and untruths. How about you actually work with Republicans to reduce spending and inflation?”
Senator McConnell:
“It’s very telling how fundamentally disorganized the Democratic Party is that they aren’t confident enough to get there own bills passed. Laughable performance.”
Senator Paul:
“We cannot continue to cave to demands from the woke mob. We will not be intimidated by the bullying that comes from the left.
I stand with my colleague @MinorityWhip22.”
Senator Scott:
“I personally call on @potusbiden_46 to resign immediately. Despite the rampant inflation and rising national debt, he has done nothing except pose for photos in matching sweaters and promote his failing radical leftist agenda.”
“I did not think it was possible for anyone to match @potusbiden_46 's level of ineptitude and ignorance however @MajLeaderHirono gives him a run for his money. The lack of accountability and progress on the Senate floor as a result of actions on her part has been deplorable (1/2)”
“I strongly urge @MajLeaderHirono to release a coherent plan for tomorrow's floor session immediately and to STOP preventing progress from being made. Hopefully she realizes that her PITIFUL attempts at political theater has fallen flat and that it's time to WAKE UP. (2/2)”
“Congrats to Senator Collins and Senator Gillibrand on the passage and signing of their bills yesterday. If Biden and his democrats weren’t so tied up in their failing radical policies, perhaps we could get more great bills like these done.”
Senator Cornyn has been especially popular on Twitter, particularly when it comes to yelling at Democrats. When asked why he chooses to condemn Democrats via Twitter, Cornyn stated “ Of course I do hold Democrats accountable for the things that they say, if they’re lying about what Republicans are doing then I hold them accountable for that.”
Senator Cornyn also expressed how “I think I am being relatively as respectful and professional as the Democrats have been to me. I try to take the high road but when the Democrats suggest that Republicans do not care about children I cannot let that go uncommented I have to speak up on it. I may be somewhat harsh and some people may take it as mean but I consistently stand for civility within committee meetings and I stand for fairness and bipartisanship.”
I don’t know if calling your colleagues “lazy liberals” and “loony Democrats” is especially civil or necessary.
Despite coming to the Washington Watch about their many woes with the Republicans, Democrats haven’t been fighting back much with them on Twitter. Maybe they should start sticking up for themselves more instead.
No matter what, Twitter remains a strong and popular form of communication for senators despite the current controversies Twitter is undergoing with its new ownership under Elon Musk. We look forward to seeing what the Republicans and Democrats continue to share with us all on Twitter.
