The Democratic Party needs Stronger Leadership.

Jonah Goldberg / October 30th 2022

The Protection of Marriage Act

Democratic leadership is quick to blame the GOP for their own faults.

During the committee hearing of “The Protection of Marriage Act”, the democratic senators shut down every proposed amendment from their republican colleagues. There was no attempt, by the Democrats, to come to a agreement on the bill that would satisfy the interests of both parties. The Republican Party adamantly expressed concern about the implications the bill would have regarding the religious freedom of the American people. In response, the Democrats insinuated that the Republican Party had prejudice reasons for disagreeing with the bill. These accusations lacked logical merit yet were used to reject any sort of compromise. After continuous refusal for cooperation, the democratic party is now claiming that:

“ …the only reason we have to go through all this trouble (with the marriage bill) is because GOP won't agree to fair debate.”- Senator Hirono (Majority Leader)

" We are outraged that some Republican senators refuse to put away their partisanship for the sake of Americans" - Senator Baldwin

These claims are both humorous and hypocritical considering that the democratic party has been consistent in their efforts to stop the Republican Party from amending the bill. Thus, the Marriage Bill’s risk of being filibustered is a direct result of the democrats’ inability to use committee time efficiently. Had the democrats utilized committee time properly, whilst maintaining an open and bipartisan mind, to properly discuss the issues of the bill and compromise on amendments, a consensus could have been made to create a bill that would appeal to the interests of all the American people. Given that this compromise was refused, the possibility of this bill passing is slim.

Despite the Democratic Party making it clear that the Marriage Bill is a priority for them, the Majority Leader has been unable to even get it on the floor. All in all, despite the Democratic parties' proclaimed passion for this bill, it is by their own shortcomings that this Bill is already dead. These shortcomings could have been avoided by stronger leadership, the ability to reach across party lines and listen to feedback; all for the sake of the American people.

Do not waste anymore time on this bill.
