Senator Cruz Filibusters the Marriage Bill

November 4th 2022// Jonah Goldberg

Despite the fact that it fails to address any prevalent issues, The “Protection of Marriage Act” makes it on to the floor. After, refusing bipartisan cooperation on this bill, shutting down all Republican amendments and having no proposed solution for the current impracticalities of this bill the Democrats STILL insisted on bringing the bill on the floor. As a result, the bill was filibustered by Senator Cruz. When asked why this filibuster was necessary he stated the following:

“I gave my initial points on this Bill that it's simply not under threat, the claims that the Dobbs decision is now precedent to overturn these rulings is absurd as Justice Illito made it clear that this was not going to happen. A singular out of the justices said that perhaps this should be looked at again. The Democrats for the Third Week in a row were willing to waste American People’s time instead of passing bi-partisna legislation that has come out of committee and if they are willing to waste the American people’s time and disrespect the Republicans Senators by not releasing a agenda for the floor session then I will not respect the Democratic Senator’s time.” - Senator Cruz

To fight for a bill that insults the Supreme Court as Law of the land is one thing but to throw a fit when it gets filibustered after the Republican Party made it clear their disagreements is nonsensical. The Democrats leave while Senator Cruz speaking not only was this disrespectful but it conveyed their clearly clouded sense of reality for expecting an alternative outcome. The tantrum about the reading of Dune is simply a distraction from the real issue at hand, the inability of the Democratic Party to cooperate for the benefit of legislation.

What happened on the floor today further displays the inadequacy of Democratic Leadership and the willingness of Democratic leadership to put aside promising legislation such as the “Conserve Order and and Police Sancity Act” to fight for a non-issue. To waste time debating an essentially already dead bill is careless and irrational. Wake up.
