GETTING TO KNOW OUR SENATORS!

Terry Gross

It's the holiday season, so I wanted to write something to help you get to know your senators! Read here about some more personal details about your favorite(?) senators.

The answers below were quoted directly from a survey these Senators completed, and my commentary is written below selected answers in this color.

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE)

FAVORITE MUSICIAN: Perhaps Lynyrd Skynyrd. But I can appreciate anything!”

TG: “Sweet home Alabama”?!?! I thought it was all about Nebraska, Senator Sasse.

FAVORITE DISH ON THE THANKSGIVING DISH: “Ham - Mac and Cheese a very close second.”

FAVORITE MOVIE: “All the President’s Men. Or Vice. Or Lincoln. Or… you get it. I love political films.”

A TYPICAL SATURDAY: “I’m a huge gym rat having been a college athlete at Harvard. So, doing a lot of cardio and strength training, or spending some down time with family. I legislate sometimes, but try to keep the amount of work I do at home at a minimum. I don’t bring work into my home.”

Name drop flex alert

FAVORITE SPORTS TEAM: “Nebraska Cornhusker Football, and now Florida Gators Football!

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX)

MUSICIAN: "Johnny Cash"

DISH ON THE THANKSGIVING TABLE: "Turkey"

Always keeping it classic!

MOVIE: "Gone with the Wind"

Frankly, Senator Cornyn, I DO give a damn! Great attention span too.

A TYPICAL SATURDAY: "Working for my constituents"

FAVORITE SPORTS TEAM: "Astros"

America's favorite pastime, and now American's favorite team!

Sen. Krysten Sinema (D-AZ)

MUSICIAN: "Stevie Nicks and Lady Gaga"

I bet she did a lot of JUST DANCING at the EDGE OF SEVENTEEN!

DISH ON THE THANKSGIVING TABLE: "Mac n Cheese and mashed potatoes"

MOVIE: "Interstellar and Back to the Future"

A TYPICAL SATURDAY: "I usually spend some time with my husband in the morning then go on a run before my usual workout. After that I spend a couple hours responding to emails and addressing other general Senate work before making dinner. I then usually do some general house cleaning before going to bed!"

A run AND a "usual workout" in one day, and she still has time to fight for her constituents?!?

SPORTS TEAM: "The Arizona Cardinals!"

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY)

MUSICIAN: "JAY-Z"

Drop Rand Paul in the middle of the jungle, give him a BLUEPRINT, and he'll build a CHURCH IN

THE WILD!

THANKSGIVING DISH: "I don't like it"

I'm guessing he eats a bowl of cold oatmeal in the living room during dinner like a rebellious

teenager. It's only one day, buddy, you'll get through it.

MOVIE: "American Beauty"

Have you ever seen it? It might not be what you think it is, Mr. Paul.

TYPICAL SATURDAY: "Casino"

GAMBLING AWAY YOUR CONSTITUENTS' TAX MONEY?!? OUTRAGEOUS.

SPORTS TEAM: "Brooklyn Nets"

Oh duh. Because of JAY-Z.

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AK)

MUSICIAN: "Johnny Cash"

THANKSGIVING DISH: "Turkey"

MOVIE: "..."

Senator Cotton didn't answer this question. It's OK, Senator, you can say The Minions. We won't

judge you.

TYPICAL SATURDAY: "Spending the day with my lovely wife and kids"

SPORTS TEAM: "Dallas Cowboys"

Sen. Angus King (I-ME)

MUSICIAN: "Iron & Wine"

Good music for staring out a window on a rainy day and mourning all those dead lobsters

THANKSGIVING DISH: "Stuffing"

MOVIE: "The Big Lebowski"

TYPICAL SATURDAY: "Trying a new diner somewhere in LA"

LA? As in Los Angeles? What is he doing there? Visiting his secret second family, perhaps?

SPORTS TEAM: "SF Giants"

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO)

MUSICIAN: "Skillet"

THANKSGIVING DISH: "Mash Potatoes"

MOVIE: "Pride and Prejudice"

Two things that Senator Hawley is very familiar with

TYPICAL SATURDAY: "Sitting around the house with my family listening to Christian Rock"

Send me your Spotify profile! So I can figure out how to delete it.

SPORTS TEAM: "St. Louis Cardinals"

Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA)

MUSICIAN: "Boston"

I see what you did there. Game recognize game.

THANKSGIVING DISH: "Mashed Potatoes"

MOVIE: "Paris is Burning"

For anyone unfamiliar, Paris is Burning is about the gay and transgender communities of New York

in the 1980s. Make of that what you will, I guess.

TYPICAL SATURDAY: "Wake up, write legislation to save the planet, sleep."

Oh ok, let me know when the planet is saved. It seems like it's close. Not.

SPORTS TEAM: "The Boston Red Sox"

Poor Maine doesn't have any professional sports teams :(

Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA)

At 12:10 on Monday, November 14, The Washington Watch was informed that Senator Cornyn impersonated Senator Padilla when answering this survey.

THE ANSWERS THAT READERS MAY HAVE ALREADY SEEN WERE WRITTEN BY SENATOR CORNYN, WHO WAS PRETENDING TO BE ALEX PADILLA. SENATOR PADILLA DOES NOT CLAIM AND EVEN DEPLORES THESE ANSWERS.

On behalf of myself and the Washington Watch, I deeply apologize to Senator Padilla and our readers.

Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)

MUSICIAN: "Taylor Swift"

This is an incomplete answer. Which Taylor Swift era?

THANKSGIVING DISH: "Stuffing"

MOVIE: "Mama Mia"

TYPICAL SATURDAY: "I wake up and walk my dog Maple with my husband and two boys. Then I make a home cooked breakfast and respond to emails, I then take my sons to their different sports games and cheer them on! We have a nice family dinner all together and then I go to bed early!"

SPORTS TEAM: "The Yankees of course"

"Of course?" Senator, prepare to be mercilessly bullied by Mets fans.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA)

MUSICIAN: "Phoebe Bridgers"

Because she is very young and youthful and hip with the kids and not at all out of touch

THANKSGIVING DISH: "Stuffing"

MOVIE: "La La Land and Ocean's 11 are my comfort movies."

TYPICAL SATURDAY: "bleak"

This is the only answer that I would have believed.

SPORTS TEAM: "Kansas City Chiefs"

You mean the only team in professional sports that hasn't changed their name from one that

appropriates and mocks Native American culture? But Senator Warren would never appropriate

Native American culture! Oh, wait...

Thanks to all the senators who took this survey and helped us get to know them!

This Thanksgiving, I'm thankful that I'm not a senator.
